About Worldcoin
Worldcoin (now World) was co-founded by Sam Altman, head of OpenAI. It addresses a question the rise of AI sharpened: how to prove online that you are a human and not a machine. The answer is the Orb, a device that scans the iris, verifies uniqueness and issues a "World ID". According to the project the scan is not stored; only a derived code is kept.
Verification is rewarded with the WLD token, which is also the heart of the dispute. Critics argue biometrics are collected mainly in poorer countries in exchange for money, and several regulators — in Spain, Kenya, Hong Kong and Brazil among others — have halted the project temporarily or permanently.
The project therefore rests on two independent questions: whether the technology can guarantee uniqueness without retaining biometrics, and whether its model of obtaining consent is acceptable. Neither is settled.
