About Ethereum
Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency and the most widely used smart-contract platform. Designed by Vitalik Buterin, the network launched in 2015. Unlike Bitcoin it isn't just a digital currency — it's a programmable blockchain running thousands of applications: DeFi protocols, NFTs, stablecoins, and tokenized assets. Ether (ETH) pays for transactions (so-called gas) and secures the network.
In September 2022 Ethereum switched from mining to proof-of-stake via "The Merge": the network is now secured by stakers who lock up their ETH, and energy consumption dropped by more than 99%. Since the EIP-1559 upgrade a portion of fees is burned, so ETH issuance can even turn negative during periods of high network activity. Spot ether ETFs have traded in the US since summer 2024.
