Pool ranking

Shares are calculated from the blocks a pool actually found — unlike reported hashrate, that can be verified in the chain. The Reports column is what a pool claims about itself; a large gap against the derived figure usually means the pool also mines for outside farms it does not count in its own numbers. Fees and server countries are taken from Braiins exactly as published, asterisks on conditional rates included.

Why pools matter

A solo miner would wait years for a block, so hashrate pools together: the pool builds the block, hands out work and splits the revenue by the work delivered. That also means the block's contents — which transactions get in — are decided by the pool operator, not the miner. Pool concentration therefore reads as a security metric: the fewer entities needed for a majority, the easier the network is to censor or rewrite.

The table derives shares from blocks, not from reported hashrate. A block is the only proof verifiable in the chain; reported hashrate is a marketing number and at some pools it is off by tens of percent. Short windows are distorted by luck — a pool can find twice its due in a single day. That is why the main column is the week, with the five-week window as a trend check.

The gap between derived and reported hashrate is worth reading on its own. Large pools often act as an umbrella for outside farms or for smaller pools parking their hashrate — they leave them out of their own statistics but mine the blocks for them. Likewise, the Servers column only says where a pool serves miners from, not where the machines stand.

The history below the ranking shows how unstable that order is. Pools holding a quarter of the network today did not exist five years ago. Stratum V2, which Braiins co-authored, wants to flip the power balance entirely — it lets each miner build the block template themselves while the pool only counts the payouts.
