How to read the monthly returns heatmap

Each cell is the percentage change in the Bitcoin price for that month — from the previous month's last closing price to the current month's last close. Green means growth, red decline, and color intensity corresponds to the size of the move. The "Total" column is the compounded return for the whole year, not the sum of the months, so for the first and last year it reflects the year-to-date portion.

The "Average" row shows how each calendar month has performed across the entire history. Bitcoin has a reputation for a strong fourth quarter and a weaker summer, but the sample is small and individual years deviate substantially from the average — seasonality is a curiosity, not a trading signal. Data comes from daily BTC/USD closing prices since 2010.
