How to read commodity prices

Commodities are quoted on exchanges as futures contracts for the nearest delivery month — hence oil in dollars per barrel, grains per bushel, and coffee or sugar in US cents per pound. Cocoa trades in dollars per metric ton and US natural gas in dollars per MMBtu. The sparkline traces the past year; a step in the curve usually is not a market move but a switch to the next delivery month — gasoline alone differs by some eight percent between its summer and winter blend. The daily change is unaffected: it compares against the close of the same contract.

Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are priced per troy ounce (31.1 grams) and each has its own page with a historical chart based on the London fixings. Copper sits in the same table but is an industrial metal quoted on the futures market in dollars per pound — hence a one-year sparkline instead of a seven-day change, and the other way round for the precious metals. Czech fuel prices do not come from an exchange but from the national statistics office, which surveys filling stations weekly — so they are actual average prices at the pump, not wholesale quotes.
