About Usual USD
USD0 is the stablecoin of the Usual protocol, backed by tokenised US Treasury bills rather than bank deposits. The project's idea is to share the bonds' yield with users instead of leaving it to the issuer — a direct critique of the USDT and USDC business model.
Holders can lock USD0 into the USD0++ variant and collect yield, or the protocol's USUAL token. That construction led to a contested episode in 2025 when the protocol changed the early redemption terms for USD0++ and its price drifted from parity — holders saw it as changing the rules mid-game.
That experience is a general lesson for yield-bearing tokens: a stablecoin that pays something carries risk a plain stablecoin does not, and its exit terms matter as much as its backing.
