About Uniswap

Uniswap is the largest decentralized exchange on Ethereum. Launched in 2018 by Hayden Adams, it introduced the model that nearly all of DeFi uses today: instead of an order book, liquidity sits in an automated market maker — a pool of two assets whose product stays constant. Anyone can supply liquidity and earn a share of the fees.

The UNI token arrived in September 2020 and was distributed retroactively — everyone who had used the exchange received 400 UNI. It was one of the first large airdrops and started the whole genre. UNI is not a claim on profit, though: it is used to vote on protocol development and on what happens to the community treasury.

That is the long-running dispute around the token. The protocol collects fees for liquidity providers, not for UNI holders — proposals to turn on a treasury share (the "fee switch") resurface year after year and run into, among other things, the worry that it would make the token look like a security.
