About Sui
Sui launched in May 2023, built by Mysten Labs, founded by engineers from the Diem team — Meta's (formerly Facebook's) unfinished payments project. The network builds on the Move language, developed for Diem, and on an unusual data model: state is not stored as one global ledger but as individual objects with owners.
That model has a practical consequence. Transactions that do not touch each other — say two different people sending two different NFTs — need not be ordered one after another and are processed in parallel. Sui is therefore fast for simple transfers; for operations over shared state, such as trading on an exchange, the advantage disappears and ordinary consensus ordering takes over.
The SUI token pays fees, is used for staking, and for voting. Criticism of the project centres on supply distribution: a large share of tokens went to investors and the team with gradual unlocks, so they keep entering circulation for years after launch.
