About Sky
Sky is the renamed MakerDAO, one of DeFi's oldest protocols and the issuer of the DAI stablecoin. The change came in 2024 as part of the Endgame plan: the MKR token converts to SKY at a fixed ratio, and a new stablecoin, USDS, launched alongside DAI.
The original idea remains — a stablecoin backed by over-collateralised deposits anyone can lock into a smart contract. What has changed substantially is the backing: a large share today consists of tokenised US government bonds, tying the protocol to traditional finance far more than before.
The SKY token is used for voting and as a last-resort backstop: in a protocol shortfall, new tokens are minted and sold to cover it, diluting holders. That is the flip side of good times, when surpluses are used to buy back and burn tokens.
