About Ripple USD
RLUSD is a dollar stablecoin launched in December 2024 by Ripple — the same company behind XRP. It is issued by its subsidiary Standard Custody & Trust Company under a New York NYDFS licence, with backing in dollar deposits and cash equivalents.
The token runs simultaneously on the XRP Ledger and on Ethereum. For Ripple it is a complement, not competition to its own coin: XRP is meant to bridge currencies in settlement, while RLUSD carries stable dollar value for payments and trading.
The project is part of a wider shift in which regulated institutions issue their own stablecoins instead of relying on USDT and USDC. Concentration remains the risk: both backing and redeemability rest on a single issuer and its licence.
