About Render
Render Network connects people who need 3D graphics rendered with people whose graphics card sits idle at home. The project comes out of OTOY, the vendor of the OctaneRender engine used in film and advertising production — so it is not a network built from scratch but the monetisation of an existing tool.
Work is split into subtasks, distributed among providers and paid in tokens according to complexity. Quality is policed by a reputation system and spot-checking of results, because verifying a render is harder than verifying a cryptographic computation.
The token originally ran on Ethereum as RNDR; in 2023 it moved to Solana for lower fees and was renamed RENDER. With the rise of generative AI the network expanded into compute for models, which is now the main reason the project gets discussed.
