About POL (ex-MATIC)
POL is the successor to the MATIC token, migrating 1:1 since 2024. Polygon began in India in 2017 as Matic Network and made its name as a cheap sidechain to Ethereum — transactions for a fraction of a cent at a time when Ethereum fees routinely exceeded ten dollars.
The rename is not cosmetic. POL is designed as a token for the whole ecosystem: a single stake is meant to secure several Polygon chains at once, including zero-knowledge networks and the forthcoming AggLayer, which aims to connect liquidity between them. MATIC could only secure one network.
The token pays fees, is staked and used for voting. The project's risk is competitive: cheap L2s on Ethereum are now plentiful, and since the 2024 Dencun upgrade fees are low on practically all of them, erasing Polygon's original headline advantage.
