About Polkadot
Polkadot launched in 2020, built by Gavin Wood, Ethereum co-founder and author of the Solidity language. The idea differs from competing L1s: Polkadot does not run applications itself. It is a relay chain providing security and communication for independent blockchains called parachains — each with its own rules but sharing the whole network's security.
Parachain slots were originally allocated through auctions in which projects locked up DOT from supporters for two years. The model proved inflexible and was replaced in 2023 by more flexible block-space purchasing (Agile Coretime), which does not require multi-million lockups up front.
DOT is used for staking, voting and reserving parachain space. Criticism of the project centres on pace: the technically ambitious architecture took years to build, and some developers left for simpler EVM environments where the cost of entry is lower.
