About PayPal USD
PYUSD is a stablecoin launched in 2023 by PayPal — the first time a major US payments company issued its own dollar token. PayPal does not issue it directly; the regulated Paxos Trust Company does, under New York's NYDFS supervision. Backing consists of dollar deposits, short-term US Treasury bills and cash equivalents.
The token is redeemable one-for-one for dollars and runs on Ethereum, Solana and other networks. Its significance lies not in the technology — it is an ordinary stablecoin — but in who stands behind it: PYUSD connects crypto infrastructure to a payment network used by hundreds of millions.
As with any deposit-backed stablecoin, the risk is counterparty rather than market. The holder relies on the issuer actually holding the reserves and releasing them when needed — a different question from the one crypto assets pose.
