About Mantle
Mantle is a Layer 2 network on Ethereum, created in 2023 by converting BitDAO — one of the largest DAOs of its time, associated with the Bybit exchange. The BIT token was swapped for MNT and a treasury worth billions came with it, giving Mantle unusually deep pockets for ecosystem incentives.
Technically it is an optimistic rollup with one difference: it does not post transaction data directly to Ethereum but to its own data availability layer. Fees are lower as a result; the price is a weaker security guarantee than rollups that publish data straight to L1.
MNT pays network fees and is used to vote on the treasury. That treasury is both the project's main argument and its main question: a subsidised ecosystem grows for as long as the subsidy lasts.
