About Litecoin

Litecoin was launched in October 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee as a lighter counterpart to Bitcoin. The code derives from Bitcoin but differs in three ways: a block arrives every 2.5 minutes instead of ten, the supply is capped at 84 million coins (four times Bitcoin's), and mining runs on Scrypt, an algorithm originally designed to resist specialised hardware.

That last intention did not hold — Scrypt ASIC miners exist and Litecoin mining is as industrial today as Bitcoin's. What remains are faster and cheaper transactions, which earned Litecoin the nickname "silver to Bitcoin's gold". The halving comes every 840,000 blocks, roughly once every four years, most recently in August 2023.

In 2022 the network added MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks), which lets users optionally hide a transaction's amount and addresses. Several exchanges delisted Litecoin in regulated jurisdictions because of it — a practical illustration of how privacy features collide with regulation.
