About Internet Computer
The Internet Computer launched in May 2021, built by the Swiss DFINITY foundation. Its ambition is the largest of any L1: to host entire applications on-chain including the frontend, so a website runs straight from the network with no cloud. Nodes run in specialised data centres on certified hardware — a fundamental difference from chains that run on ordinary computers.
The economics are inverted relative to convention: the user does not pay per transaction; the developer pays in "cycles", created by burning ICP. The application carries its own running costs and fees are zero for the end user.
The project's launch was among the worst in the industry — the token lost over 95% of its value within months, followed by lawsuits over how supply was distributed among early investors. Technically the network runs and continues to develop, but that episode still colours how the market sees the project.
