About Hedera

Hedera is not a blockchain in the usual sense — it runs on the hashgraph data structure patented in 2016 by Leemon Baird. Instead of a chain of blocks, nodes spread information through a "gossip about gossip" protocol and derive transaction ordering from who learned what and when. The result is high throughput and transactions confirmed in seconds at a fixed fee of a fraction of a cent.

Its most contested feature is governance. The network is run by the Hedera Governing Council — a limited number of large organisations (Google, IBM, Boeing and LG have been among them) that approve changes and operate nodes. Supporters see this as a guarantee of stability and legal certainty for corporate deployments; critics see it as a denial of decentralisation, since an ordinary HBAR holder decides nothing.

The HBAR token pays fees, secures the network through staking, and pays for services such as the Hedera Token Service (issuing tokens) and the Consensus Service (timestamping data). That second service is why Hedera shows up in enterprise projects for supply-chain traceability.
