About Filecoin
Filecoin is a market for storage space. Anyone with a spare disk can offer capacity and get paid in FIL; a client stores data with them and the network continuously verifies the provider really holds it. The project launched in 2020, built by Protocol Labs, also behind the IPFS protocol.
The verification is the technically interesting part. A provider must repeatedly prove it holds the data — through proof-of-spacetime — and posts FIL collateral against sealed storage, which it forfeits if the data is lost. The network's economics are therefore capital-intensive for miners, not just hardware-intensive.
In 2023 the Filecoin Virtual Machine arrived, allowing smart contracts on the network and further services built on top of storage. The project's main open question remains the ratio between capacity offered and capacity actually used for paid data.
