About Ethereum Classic

Ethereum Classic is Ethereum's original chain, continuing without any intervention in its history. In 2016 an attacker drained over 3.6 million ETH from The DAO project and the community split: the majority approved a hard fork that reversed the transaction and became today's Ethereum. The minority refused on the grounds that "code is law" — and their chain is ETC.

The key difference from Ethereum is consensus. While Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake in 2022, ETC stayed with mining. After the Merge some miners who had lost a use for their hardware moved onto it. Supply is also capped at roughly 210.7 million ETC, which Ethereum has no equivalent of.

A smaller hashrate has consequences: in 2019 and 2020 ETC suffered several 51% attacks in which history was rewritten and already-confirmed transactions were re-sent. Exchanges therefore require far more confirmations for ETC than for Bitcoin.
