About Dai
Dai is the oldest major decentralized stablecoin — issued since 2017 by the MakerDAO protocol (today Sky). It isn't backed by a company with a bank account but by overcollateralized crypto locked in smart contracts; the dollar peg is maintained by market mechanisms and the protocol's interest rates.
After MakerDAO's rebrand to Sky, Dai exists alongside its successor stablecoin USDS. For DeFi, Dai remains a basic building block — it works permissionlessly and without the ability to freeze funds.
