About Bittensor
Bittensor is an attempt to build a machine-learning market on Bitcoin's rules. The network consists of subnets; in each, miners compete by supplying some model capability — generating text, embeddings, predictions — and validators score their outputs. The TAO reward is split according to how useful the scoring judged the output to be.
The economics are deliberately derived from Bitcoin: 21 million TAO in total, with a halving emission schedule. The first halving fell in 2025. The difference is what gets paid for — useful model work instead of hashing power, which is also the weakness: someone has to measure "usefulness", and validators do.
That is where criticism lands. Scoring can be gamed, and there have been repeated concerns that miners optimise for the metric rather than genuine quality. The project responds with ongoing mechanism changes (dTAO from 2025), so the rules are not as settled as Bitcoin's.
