About Avalanche
Avalanche launched in September 2020, built by Ava Labs led by Emin Gün Sirer, a computer science professor from Cornell. The network has an unusual structure: instead of one chain it runs three. The X-Chain for asset transfers, the C-Chain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (where all DeFi lives), and the P-Chain, which coordinates validators and subnets.
Subnets are the project's central idea — anyone can launch their own network with their own rules, their own fee token, and even a requirement that validators pass KYC. This is how Avalanche targets institutions and regulated industries that a public chain does not suit. Subnet validators must also stake AVAX on the main network.
Consensus does not rest on everyone voting with everyone, but on repeatedly polling a small random sample of nodes until the network settles on one answer. This allows confirmation in under two seconds. AVAX pays fees, is staked and used for voting; fees are burned, so supply can fall when traffic is high.
