About Arbitrum

Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup on Ethereum from Offchain Labs, launched in 2021. The principle is that transactions execute off Ethereum and only a summary is posted to the main chain. "Optimistic" means that summary is assumed correct until someone challenges it — a window of roughly seven days, which shows up as the waiting period when withdrawing back to Ethereum.

It has long been the largest L2 by value locked. The ARB token was distributed by airdrop in March 2023 and is purely governance — fees are paid in ETH, not ARB, unlike networks such as Mantle or Polygon.

Treasury voting comes with disputes typical of DAOs: the very first proposal after the airdrop concerned a billion tokens for the foundation, and the community rejected it once it emerged that some funds had already been spent. Governance here is not a formality, but nor is it a smooth process.
