About Aave
Aave is DeFi's largest decentralized lending protocol. It started in Finland in 2017 as ETHLend, renamed in 2018 and moved from matching individual loans to shared liquidity pools. Depositors earn interest automatically; borrowers take loans against collateral they must keep above a set threshold — fall below it and the collateral is sold in a liquidation.
Aave introduced flash loans: an uncollateralised loan that must be repaid within the same transaction. It sounds like a trick, and in practice it works like one — used for arbitrage and refinancing, but also for attacks on other protocols where the attacker needs enormous capital for a moment.
The AAVE token is used for voting and as insurance: holders can stake it into the Safety Module, which sells part of the staked tokens to cover a shortfall in the protocol. They earn a reward for that protection — so it is payment for bearing risk, not passive yield.
